Firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, and wildland crews put their lives on the line every day. Our mission is to make sure they never stand alone. National Firefighters United exists to strengthen protections, negotiate strong contracts, and defend the rights of the first responders who safeguard our communities.
Our Story
For more than a century, firefighters have relied on solidarity to secure safer stations, better training, and stronger protections. National Firefighters United was built by rank-and-file firefighters who believed in one simple truth: those who run toward danger deserve a powerful voice at the table.
From our earliest organizing committees to today’s national network of local unions, we have fought for safer gear, fair scheduling, cancer-prevention initiatives, and fully staffed departments. Our history is written in every contract won, every station improved, and every firefighter who came home safe because of stronger standards.

What We Do
Organize & Advocate
Support career and volunteer firefighters in forming unions, winning recognition, and raising safety and staffing standards.
Bargain for Strong Contracts
Negotiate collective bargaining agreements that protect wages, hours, staffing minimums, insurance, retirement, and safe-duty policies.
Protect Members’ Rights
Provide grievance representation, legal referrals, and support for members facing workplace issues, injuries, or unfair discipline.
Develop Leaders Through Training
Offer steward training, incident-command leadership development, contract-negotiation training, and health & safety education.
Advance Safety & Wellness
Campaign for cancer-prevention programs, PTSD/behavioral-health support, modern equipment, and station safety improvements.
Strengthen Community Partnerships
Collaborate with elected officials, emergency-response agencies, veterans’ groups, and community coalitions to improve public safety.

Training & Apprenticeship Programs
Preparing the Next Generation of First Responders
Our Joint Training & Apprenticeship programs help members master firefighter fundamentals, EMT certifications, hazmat operations, wildland response, technical rescue, and leadership skills. We partner with departments and academies nationwide to ensure every recruit receives world-class training.
Community & Veterans Program
Firefighters have always been community builders. Our union invests in:
